Amber- “okay so one day right before graduating high school i was riding my bike through tahoe and i saw a little flyer blowing from a nail on a tree that said “wood sculpture apprenticeship” and i thought “wow, i would much rather do that than college!” (the brilliance of a 17 year old) and so i dropped the idea of college and moved to carson city, nevada to learn to use a chainsaw and make things like leopards and sailors and benches and pretty signs then one late night in the studio i was talking with the head sculptor there and he was telling me one of the most significant things he ever learned in life was the importance of following your number one passion and not your second or third, because you will only be truly great if you’re doing what you really love most. so i put down my chainsaw, quit, and told him i was going to learn to play guitar and be a musician.”

Amber is touring with Adam Levy….Adam Levy is best known for his tenure as the featured guitarist in Norah Jones’ Handsome Band. He played on her breakout 2002 disk Come Away with Me, her ‘04 follow-up Feels Like Home, and her latest CD Not Too Late. In his downtime between steady gigs with Jones, Levy has been onstage and/or in the studio with Rosanne Cash, Amos Lee, M. Ward, and up-and-coming Aussie artist Eran James.

In addition to Levy’s skills as a player, he is a gifted songwriter. He penned “In the Morning” for Jones’ Feels Like Home, and other artists have recorded his songs as well. There’s no doubt, though, that the best way to hear Levy’s folk/pop/blues gems is straight from the source.

“Adam Levy has a reputation for tailoring imaginative and elegant guitar solos to fit almost any tune, beginning with Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason” and more recently on Norah Jones’ three CDs. When not busy backing Jones, the former Bay Area jazz musician has been writing tunes of his own, mostly in a bluesy folk vein, and he sings 11 of them on Washing Day. Lingering fragrances, coin laundries and pay phones inform his highly poetic, deeply emotional and at times disturbing songs about a lost lover. He avoids the wind because it reminds him of her touch, threatening to stir up a storm inside him. Finally, in a cow-punk ode titled “I Shot Her Down,” he commits murder. Pain oozes from Levy’s craggy tenor tones, which he answers with blistering shards of guitar sound.”

A few weeks back I read an article featuring the Avett Brothers in American Songwriter magazine and it got me excited about their upcoming album release this Summer. I only recently got into the Avett Brothers with their 2007 release Emotionlism and last year’s EP The Second Gleam.  Their music is pretty simple, but their lyrics are intense. For a taste, try “Murder in the City” (from The Second Gleam) below. Simply beautiful. I’ve also heard there live shows are VERY spirited, fueled by loyal and rabid fans.  Catch them if you can, they’re doing shows with Dave Matthews in April and May.

So, now Rick Rubin has signed the Avett Brothers to his label American Recordings. He has also produced their forthcoming album release. Rubin is known as a brilliant producer and music man. He has a long, long string of producing masterpiece recordings and reviving long lost careers.  I’ve read that some believe that this is an unnecessary risk that the Avett Brothers are taking by going with Rubin, that somehow he might change them, disappointing the fans that have gotten the Avett Brothers to where they are now.  Of course , we won’t know how this all turns out for them until the album is release, but from reading the article, I get the feeling that it will all work out fine for the Avett Brothers.  Enjoy the read - THE AVETT BROTHERS: Life and Art, Ambition and Vision | American Songwriter.
