> Fast Forward – The Avett Brothers

Every now and then we’ll Fast Forward and profile an upcoming release we can’t wait to hear.

A few weeks back I read an article featuring the Avett Brothers in American Songwriter magazine and it got me excited about their upcoming album release this Summer. I only recently got into the Avett Brothers with their 2007 release Emotionlism and last year’s EP The Second Gleam.  Their music is pretty simple, but their lyrics are intense. For a taste, try “Murder in the City” (from The Second Gleam) below. Simply beautiful. I’ve also heard there live shows are VERY spirited, fueled by loyal and rabid fans.  Catch them if you can, they’re doing shows with Dave Matthews in April and May.

Music Saves Mountains

I came across this site that’s trying to help stop mountaintop removal coal mining in the Appalachian Mountains.  If you’re not familiar with this issue, visit the site below. You’ll also find an easy way to contact congress and let them know you oppose mountaintop removal. If you live in Tennessee, where there’s a proposed bill that would ban mountaintop removal coal mining, use the link to send a message to the governor saying that you oppose the process.

Neko Case Setlist – Variety Playhouse – Atlanta, GA – 4/2/09

Natalie (Sugar Magnolia) and I had the great honor of seeing Neko Case last night. Great show!  Sorry Hickory Wind, you missed a good one, but I would trade to be in St. Lucia any day. We miss you!

Case seemed very determined (even with some apprehension) to push Middle Cyclone, performing 12 of the 14 music tracks from the new album. And “Marais la nuit” even got an airing at the end of the night. This may or may not be welcoming news for die-hard fans, as I’m sure someone’s favorite “deep cut” (Case and backup singer Kelly Hogan’s banter had the crowd in laughter most of the night) was surely left out. But you can’t make everyone happy all of the time.  As Hogan said from the stage after someone called out a request, “Not going to happen.” Fortunately Middle Cyclone is filled with great songs and Case and here band put on a great performance. I just wish “Magpie” would have made it into the setlist, but I’m still happy.
